Both are popular, both work well, and both will let you see who's at your door from your phone. Here's how to know which one is right for your home.
Video doorbells have become increasingly popular across Minnesota neighborhoods — and for good reason. They let you see and speak with visitors from anywhere, get alerts when someone approaches, and record video for peace of mind. Ring and Google Nest are the two most common options, and choosing between them comes down to a few practical questions.
Ring doorbells are slightly more common and tend to be a little less expensive upfront. The app is straightforward to navigate, and the setup process is well-documented. Ring connects naturally with Amazon Alexa — so if you have an Echo speaker, everything ties together smoothly.
One thing to know: saving and reviewing recorded video requires a Ring Protect subscription ($3.99–$10/month). Without it, you'll get live view and alerts, but no stored footage.
If you already use Gmail, Google Calendar, or a Google Home speaker, the Nest doorbell fits naturally into that world. You can say "Hey Google, show me the front door" and it will appear on a compatible screen. Google Nest also stores a short clip history for free (3 hours), which is a nice bonus.
Think about what devices you already use at home:
Both doorbells come in wired and battery-powered versions. Battery-powered is simpler to install, but requires periodic charging. Wired versions connect to your existing doorbell wiring and provide more consistent performance — but if your home's wiring is unfamiliar territory, it can be frustrating to work with.
When set up properly, both Ring and Nest perform reliably. The right choice is the one that fits the devices you already have. If you'd like help with installation, connecting the app, and making sure notifications are set up correctly, I'm happy to come out and handle all of it.
